My top 10 places for coffee in Portsmouth & Southsea

My top 10 places for coffee in Portsmouth & Southsea

So, here’s the thing. There’s recently been a lot of hype over a recent post on WOW247 Portsmouth from November 2015 of which a resident describes ‘10 of the best places to get coffee in Portsmouth‘. Now, either this person is relatively new to the area, or not the greatest coffee fan around because they have missed some top places! Correction, missed the BEST places to drink coffee in the area. I’m not claiming to be the biggest coffee fan, I have about one a day and will treat myself to the occasional rocket-fuelled coffee buzzfest over a weekend catching up with friends/ family, though I worked as a barista in my younger years and can smell out a good coffee when it’s wafting in my general direction. Without further ado (and in no specific order)….

Home Coffee Southsea

This place is f**king awesome. Language? Please, I  care not. The coffee is velvety smooth, the staff are a delight and a Brucey bonus for me is that they can also whiz up a mean gluten-free sandwich (the cranberry walnut and brie is the mutts nuts).

Famous to the locals for delicious slices of cake as big as your noggin. You should probably grab a slice to go along with your steaming hot coffee in this delightful cafe right next to the seafront. Bliss.

Once a small stationary trailer along Southsea Seafront, this team of coffee lovers went big and now have an awesome, drink-in (you can takeaway too) cafe in it’s place, and directly on the beach. It’s toasty warm inside in the colder months and has seating outside as well as a kiddies play area. Grab a coffee and daydream whilst looking at the spectacular views. They also have other locations, though the seafront one is my personal fave.

Southsea Coffee Co.

You’d be foolish to bypass this place. It’s one of the most loved and cherished coffee outlets in Southsea and you’ll understand why after that first sip. They also offer some of the most beautiful raw cakes I have ever tasted along with healthy breakfast and lunch food options.

Canvas Coffee Shop

This place fills me with joy for many reasons. Obviously coffee… delicious, tasty coffee. Though also the story that goes with it. Canvas Coffee shop is a social enterprise which offers (to quote their website) volunteer work experience opportunities and Barista Skills courses to those in early recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, to build self-esteem and confidence as well as developing skills’. The staff are welcoming, friendly and know their stuff. Tucked away in Portsmouth & Southsea train station, pop in, buy a coffee and support.

This place is open late and has a quirky atmosphere which I really love. I haven’t been for a while, though from previous visits I can confirm that their coffee and hot chocolate are fantastic. They also have some delicious food on offer. In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m kinda into the food element here too 😉

Coffee #1

Situated long Palmerston Road shopping precinct, this cafe serves up it’s coffee with great care and has plenty of seating, so is a perfect place to take the fam on of a weekend. It’s busy, bustling and a really happy atmosphere to be in. Five gold stars.

This little treasure is too frequently over-looked for my liking! A fantastic art gallery and creative hub all packaged inside the stunning Vulcan building, behind Loch Fyne in Gunwharf Quays. They regularly have art activities for children and adults alike, support local artists/ creative types and have a fantastic little shop selling unique gifts. Their coffee is hot, their food is a delight and it’s great if you want to grab a coffee/ some food in Gunwharf, but avoid the crazy crowds.

A small and friendly cafe along Albert Road. The coffee is really tatsy, the atmosphere relaxed and if you haven’t had a portuguese tart from this place then you haven’t lived. Seriously. If I wasn’t gluten intolerant I’d eat those bad boys 24/7.

Though not selling a massive variety of coffee, this place is always warm and welcoming. They also serve amazing breakfasts, juices and the decor is adorable. I love this place and am a regular.
